![]() Also, you'll end up casting a lot of spells at fail rates of like 8-12%/yellow in ring mail because the miscast chance is entirely worth the power of the better spells at that rate. Basically, you go for your breakpoints for many skills, like exactly Armour at 6/7 for the +1 AC it gives at full or almost-full slots of 1-armor gear(Helmet, gloves, cloak, etc.). On the note of training as a mummy, if you aren't extremely miserly with your exp, you're going to struggle. (Except for the MP points you gain at the lower levels, but training past like 5 or 10 for the 1 or 2 more spellcasts it gives you isn't very exciting compared to whatever else you could be doing with those skill levels) Having everyone lack spell hunger also significantly reduces the usefulness of Spellcasting training beyond what's needed for spell levels, too. Not having spell hunger was actually a really big upside, yeah.Įveryone having no spell hunger in trunk makes mummy significantly less compelling, I feel. This beautiful and complex game is free and waiting D If you are a roguelike fan and haven't given DCSS a shot-check out the above linked series for a caster or this series for how to play a melee type (for complete beginners). Thank you so much for your consideration and support! I love this game and am really committed to trying to offer the DCSS/roguelike community some useful content.Ī link to the first episode in the series is here. I'm not sure how far I will go-just far enough to provide people with a foundation that allows transition into the mid game, I think, but maybe further, if it is useful and people express an interest ) I'm uploading episode 5 today, which takes us to D7 XL 9 so far. These videos chronicle the full gameplay of the mage as I work through each decision, explain some keyboard shortcuts/commands, basic DCSS strategy, and the philosophy of being a caster in the game. It's all, just, my opinion, man D But I think there is some good stuff here, if you are looking to try out a caster. Please bear in mind that there are so many ways to play this game and not all of my advice may suit you. Of course, this isn't perhaps the starting caster species/background combo that some want, but it's a solid build that gives survivability and lets you get more time under your robes before you splat (theoretically). ![]() I choose the Venom Mage background because the spells are amazing and very powerful early (an even shine in certain rune branches like the Shoals and Vaults, for example). In this series, I play as an Ogre Venom Mage, because Ogres have lots of health and aren't as squishy as some species with better casting aptitudes. ![]() I have mostly played as a melee type and recently have been educated on stream by rl friends and viewers on how to play a caster, so I thought I'd share as much info as I have and see if it was useful to anyone. I am only a medium strength player and I don't have all the knowledge in the DCSS world, but I have been playing for almost a decade and give my advice with those caveats/conditions in place ) The series is not meant for complete DCSS strangers (although anyone with roguelike experience would probably do okay) but is more aimed at those who have played a little and would like some advice on how to play a caster if they have normally been playing melee. I have been making a beginner caster guide for Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup (DCSS) in 2020 with v.
